Some of the common things that employers try to make their workers pay for include:

  • Uniforms: In many positions, you should not be required to pay for your work uniforms.
  • Sales samples: As a general rule, salespeople should not be required to pay for the samples they use to sell the products.
  • Tools of the trade: In most jobs, you should not be required to purchase the tools of your trade, especially if they are unique to the company for which you are working and you will not otherwise have any use for those tools.
  • Training: You should not be made to pay for the training required to sell your company's unique products. When a company wants you to pay for this training, or does not pay you for this training, it might be in violation of California employment law.
